Pink Diamonds: Rarity, Beauty & the Legacy of Australia's Finest Gem

Posted by Tim Ferguson on

When it comes to rare and beautiful gemstones, few can match the allure of an Argyle pink diamond. Coveted by collectors and admired by jewellery lovers around the world, these remarkable stones are more than just a luxurious choice—they’re a piece of Australian history.

What Makes Argyle Pink Diamonds So Special?

The majority of the world’s pink diamonds—over 90%—came from a single source: the Argyle Diamond Mine, located in the remote East Kimberley region of Western Australia. Operated by Rio Tinto, the mine produced an extraordinary spectrum of diamonds but is best known for its vibrant and highly sought-after pink diamonds.

What sets them apart is not just their origin, but also their unmatched colour intensity, geological rarity, and limited supply.

🔹 True Rarity

Pink diamonds make up less than 0.1% of global diamond production. Of those, Argyle’s gems were often the most saturated and vivid in tone, ranging from soft blush pinks to deep, almost purplish hues. Their formation remains a mystery—unlike most diamonds, their pink colour is not caused by chemical impurities but by intense pressure and distortion in the earth’s crust over billions of years.

🔹 A Closed Chapter: Argyle Mine Closure

In 2020, the Argyle Mine officially ceased operations. This event sent ripples through the jewellery world, as it signalled the end of an era. With no new pink diamonds entering the market from this iconic source, Argyle stones are now finite, collectable, and rapidly increasing in value.

The Colour Grading of Pink Diamonds

Argyle pink diamonds are graded not just by the GIA standard (cut, colour, clarity, and carat), but also by a unique Argyle grading scale. Colours are classified from:

  • 1PP (1 Purplish Pink) – the deepest, rarest saturation

  • to 9P (9 Pink) – the lightest shades

Some diamonds also fall into Fancy Red, Fancy Violet, or Fancy Purplish Pink, making them exceptionally rare and valuable.

Investing in a Legacy

With the mine now closed and global demand rising, Argyle pink diamonds are increasingly seen as not just luxury items but smart investments. Their scarcity and cultural significance continue to attract discerning collectors, investors, and those celebrating life’s most meaningful milestones.
